Bing Off to a Good Start

By now you’ve probably seen one of the new TV ads for Microsoft’s new search engine, Bing. Desperate to slow the growth of Google, Microsoft is going all out with the launch of Bing and has planned a huge advertising campaign to build awareness and market share.

So far, the media blitz appears to be working. Several data sources including StatCounter and comScore have released information showing that Microsoft has seen a substantial boost in its share of web searches since the launch of Bing. So far, the lift in Bing’s market share has held relatively steady which is likely a positive sign for the search engine. The real test for Microsoft is whether it will be able to convert these Bing trial users into long-term users or whether they will go right back to their former search engine of choice. Only time will tell the true success of Bing, but things are certainly off to a positive start for Microsoft’s latest project.

I think the data is merely awareness spike. I don’t think people are going to change their habits…

Microsoft has spent a reported $100 million to launch their new ‘decision engine’ Bing. I can appreciate their desire to go big with this product launch, but in the process they really dropped the ball on some great opportunities (and some alternatives). Yes, I am talking about the basics of content marketing.

With Bing, so far Microsoft has gone for big ad plays — TV, a Hulu live extravaganza, media buys. I won’t critique their advertising, I have no doubt that others are better equipped for that. They are obviously hoping to get some traction through major media outlets, but they haven’t laid the groundwork for their message to spread organically through online channels.

Thanks for the comment, Andrew. I pretty much agree with you. I don’t see people making a permanent switch to Bing, but time will tell!

I Don’t know about Bing. I tried to search “what is Bing” and it couldnt tell me, all I got was an electronic company and some info about Bing Crosby!

I had to go to Google to eventually find out what Bing was!

I think I’ll give it some time to settle in ;-)
