One of the easiest SEO factors to manage for your webpages is also one of the most important. I’m talking about the page title. In addition to showing up in the title bar on your visitor’s web browser, a page’s title also help search engines understand what your page is all about. It is probably the single most important SEO related element of your webpage.
So, how do you go about creating a high-quality and effective page title? If there are certain keywords or phrases that you are targeting in the SERPs, be sure to include them in your title. Put important terms as early in the title as possible, but make sure that it still reads normally to a web surfer looking through the search results. Also, make sure to only include each term or phrase once in the title. Repeating words in the title can be counterproductive and might get your page tagged as spam.
An important aspect of branding is to include your company or website name in the title also. When surfers see your site name repeatedly show up in the titles of search results, it will begin to stick in their minds and give your website more credibility. One technique that I like to use for this is to title each page with the topic/key terms, then my website name.
For example, a title for this post could be “Elements of a Great Webpage Title | Emarketing Newsletter”. Making all of your page titles like this will help your pages rank well for the early title words while still getting your company or website name plenty of exposure.
One final piece of information you should consider including in a page title is your company or product location. This can dramatically increase your page’s rankings in local and geographic targeted searches and also for long-tail searches that include your location. This won’t be helpful for everyone, but it can help move your site to the top of the rankings for a given geographic target.
