Best On-Page Keyword Practices

So, you’re trying to work your way to the top of Google for your targeted keyword or phrase. Here are a few tips relating to your on-page SEO and how to best use your keywords on the page.

  1. Make sure your keyword is in the Title tag of your page ONE time. Including a keyword more than once in the title might signal to Google that the page is spam.
  2. Do your best to use your keyword once in the H1 header tag of the page.
  3. It’s good to have your keyword in bold or italics somewhere on the page. I suggest only bolding one instance of the keyword to avoid the appearance of spam.
  4. Include your keyword at least two or three times in the content of your page. For longer pages, it might be fine to include the keyword even more often.
  5. Avoid using your keyword in any outbound links on the page. This would indicate to the search engine that the page you are linking to is also relevant to your keyword and can create additional competition for you.

As you have probably caught on, the general rule is to use your keyword often, but only as much as is natural. If you start plugging a keyword into every sentence, the page will look very suspect to Google and other search  engines. Implementing these easy, on-page SEO tactics can provide a strong boost to your page’s rankings in the SERPs.

Hi Justin,

I’d like to add one more thing, even though it throws off the symmetry of five things. That being, if you can, have at least one of your keywords, if not your entire phrase, in the URL of your article. For a blog, what your title is becomes your URL, and if it’s a pretty good keyword phrase, then you’re good to go.
